The events of 0 AD take place in the year zero AD. The gameplay is a real-time strategy game. Players take control of civilizations starting in 500 BC. and trying to get to 1 AD. At the same time, you need to collect resources, build settlements, train troops and crush the army of opposing factions.

The gameplay is based on historical accuracy. The names of units, peoples, settlements and many other elements of the project fully correspond to reality. Special units called heroes are available. They correspond to their real historical prototypes. Mechanics are inspired by the Age of Empires series. There are 4 types of resources: food (berries, hunting, fishing, livestock and farming), wood (cutting trees), stone (quarries) and metal (mining deposits). Each resource is needed for specific purposes: training an army, building walls and towers, creating weapons, etc. You can build city centers, piers and warehouses. There are treasures on the territory that can be found if you carefully explore the locations.

Units are divided into military and workers. Militant units consist of foot troops, spearmen, archers, siege specialists, mounted units and heroes. Workers include women, doctors, traders, lumberjacks, etc. In 0 AD, you can build several types of ships: military, merchant and fishing. The city consists of a center, estates, paddocks, houses, stables and other buildings. The warring factions are the Celtic tribes (Britons and Gauls), the Hellenistic states (Athens and Sparta), the Diadochi (Macedonia, the Seleucid State and the Ptolemies) and the Independents (Carthage, the Iberian Tribes, the Mauryan Empire, the Persians, the Roman Republic and the Cushites). The modes are Scenarios, Random Maps, Skirmish and Multiplayer. A map editor with a wide range of tools is available.
