The game has 24 stations of the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya line. They have different architecture because they were built in different eras. The title allows the user to be a driver or an ordinary passenger and observe the events taking place from the first person. Besides him, there are bots in the underground tunnels. All other trains are controlled by artificial intelligence. To avoid accidents in underground tunnels, you need to observe traffic intervals, monitor the schedule and alarms, and also check the speedometer and traffic lights.

The Metro 2 simulator contains two modes - a free ride and a set of scenarios. The first option is something like a sandbox. There the user is allowed to play the role of a driver or passenger. The player can wander through stations, choose routes and set schedules, determine where he will appear on the map, and so on. They also allow him to ride without virtual people. There are 3 locomotives to choose from. They all differ in their control system. In addition, they all have detailed cabins. The second mode confronts the user with various scenario conditions prescribed by the developers in advance. The gamer needs to complete tasks and obey the dispatcher.
