The player may select from four distinct characters.

• Lilith has masterful control of her psychic powers and submachine guns are an indispensable asset.
• On the other hand, Brick specializes in close combat using fists and grenade launchers while being protected by Rage mode for healing during close fight.

Borderlands' initial gameplay involves accepting quests from friendly non-player characters in order to acquire experience, equipment and currency. At first each protagonist starts out with 2 firearm slots equipped and 12 for first aid kits defensive skills and weapons available - which eventually increase up to 42. Thanks to random generation bonuses on weapons the possible arsenal on Pandora amounts up to an astounding 17.5 Million Units; exploring this rich world can also be done cooperatively by up to four people over the Internet at the same time!
