Developers manually designed each dungeon that users must explore to clear, providing memorable areas to explore on each terrain map. Nonlinearity comes into play through choosing routes at forks or peaceful solutions at times of tension versus destruction of everything in your path. Role playing allows players to upgrade each member of their squad with weapons tailored specifically towards your playing style for more effective destruction against opponents and protagonists can even upgrade themselves by switching out equipment pieces as you level up!
