River City Saga: Three Kingdoms offers gamers another opportunity to become immersed in Kunio-kun and his companions' exploits; this time in ancient China rather than modern Japan. The writers immersed a Japanese schoolboy into Three Kingdoms period history and forced him to fight as Guan Yu, an important Chinese warlord known for defending China against enemies during warlord conflicts. Their nonlinear story campaign is broken up into 6 chapters; their narrative does not cover all key historical events but instead covers only certain ones briefly. This spin-off features hand-drawn, pixel, and 3D graphics and serves up classic beat-em-up action! In addition to single player mode, there is multiplayer support enabling multiple users to compete together on one computer at the same time!

River City Saga: Three Kingdoms provides easy leveling. Here, players can increase levels, distribute points according to characteristics and develop skills. As they advance further in combat skills training, their arsenal grows further - initially offering basic kicks and punches as well as throws. Unlocking more techniques comes as rewards from completing quests or learning from masters at dojos for money, though sometimes fighting superior enemy forces requires using weapons acquired during battle to unlock more. Gamers have free reign to explore a partially open world and interact with various NPCs. Furthermore, China Hero Mode adds another dynamic experience, turning this project into an old-school arcade beat-em-up with linear progression through 24 playable characters; 8 of whom must first be unlocked before becoming available for selection.
