Like a Dragon: Ishin! takes players back to Kyoto in the 1860s for an exciting journey with Sakamoto Ryoma as his adventures unfold. According to the plot, this samurai must clear himself of suspicion of killing Yoshida Toyo and find the real perpetrator behind his relative's murder in order to restore his honor and claim victory in their duel against injustice, lead a revolution, and alter history for their country of birth. This warrior can use his fists, use katanas and other swords, as well as revolvers or early guns for shooting. Over time he will become adept at mastering different fighting styles and gain access to new armor and items as time progresses. Equipment can be created or improved at the blacksmith, while equipment can also be purchased or upgraded from other shops in town. Genre-wise, this game is a beat-em-up slasher with third-person view and adventure elements; and includes many minigames (such as casino, dance hall, chicken races prototype karaoke bars dojos bathhouses). There are also numerous side quests.

Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin! is a spin-off of Like a Dragon (formerly Yakuza). In contrast to its serial parts, however, its action takes place during Japan's 19th-century rather than contemporary Japan. Additionally, this remake was originally released during mid-2010s but only within Japan itself; later adapted for Western audiences including translations into multiple languages and improved graphics; although different settings and characters such as Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima weren't featured, its gameplay and atmosphere remain synonymous.
