EXAPUNKS takes the user into the fictional world of 1997. The continent where the main character lives is heavily computerized, and a virus codenamed Phage infects the population, turning all carriers into computer components. The gamer will have to take control of a hacker named Moss in order to hack secure systems and afford a cure that costs $700 a day.

With the help of a vaccine, the protagonist will not turn into a computer part and will slow down the development of the disease. A secret AI called EMBER-2 gives the central character hacking tasks and helps with the passage. By reading JINS, the user will learn how to hack difficult systems. The underground newspaper TRASH WORLD NEWS contains a variety of instructions on how to obtain prohibited information and hack programs. Evading without a trace, replicating itself, traversing networks, shutting down enemy EXAs, and other functions are performed using its own execution agents.

A hacker can create home projects, play solitaire while hacking servers, or fight in hack and match mode. The gameplay features multiplayer participation, allowing you to compete with your friends by running programs against them. Through the workshop, gamers share their scenarios and designs, and the editor helps design individual missions.
