LIVE A LIVE is a Japanese role-playing adventure whose campaign consists of 7 unique chapters. It is noteworthy that the levels can be completed in any order. Each level has an individual style, which allows the LIVE A LIVE gameplay to combine elements of different genres, such as Western, sci-fi and mecha. All episodes feature distinct stories, characters, and settings. However, the storylines converge at one point at the end of the campaign.

Gameplay for a particular character can introduce unique mechanics. For example, when playing as a deadly ninja, the gameplay is oriented towards a spy action movie, while the gameplay for other heroes can be completely different. After completing all seven stages, two bonus chapters are unlocked, which further shed light on what is happening and better tie the story together. All main characters have their own biography, motivation and abilities that influence the style of play.

You will need to manage a group of fighters, moving between various locations. You need to explore cities, go down to dungeons, complete quests and fight different creatures. For winning, experience points are awarded and the level increases. After each battle, units' vital forces are automatically replenished. Battles take place on a field measuring 7 by 7 cells. You can move around them, trying to come up with inventive tactics against your opponent. Commands to partners must be given through a special menu.
